About Chikura Onsen

We have two types of hot spring baths at our ryokan. The small baths are 100% source spring water, while the large baths have water added to make it 50% source spring water. To maintain the full effectiveness of the source water, the small bath is not as hot as the others. For the greatest effect, we recommend alternating between the small and large baths any number of times.

Origins of Chikura Onsen

The story of Chikura Onsen dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333) after the Battle of Ishibashiyama (1180). The warrior and clan leader Minamoto Yoritomo, was defeated in battle, but was determined to make a comeback. He found himself in the Emi–Futomi area of Awa Province along the sea route, where he was saved by Hirano Niemon of Niemon-jima Island. One day, while in search of military reinforcements, Yoritomo's favorite horse, Hagoromo, injured its leg in the Chikura village hunting grounds. Hagoromo then set her leg into a spring bubbling up on the roadside, and before long could walk again well enough to return. (The place the pair are said to have rested at on their return, Oyasumi, still exists today.) Yoritomo considered the hot spring to have miraculous healing powers and when he returned with his horsemen, he had them rest here and ordered his retainers to heat baths with the spring water for the men to recover and restore their strength. Finally the morning came for Yoritomo's reinforced army to depart for battle. They gathered near what is now 4 km west of Chikura Station, and it is said that they bathed in the hot spring on that morning, too.
We sincerely hope that you will also find healing qualities from these lucky waters. Soak deeply and may you depart for battle in the world and maintain your good health.
